This test detects IgM antibodies to the core antigen of hepatitis B virus (HBcIgM), indicating recent or acute infection.
It helps distinguish acute HBV infection from chronic or resolved infection and is often used in conjunction with other HBV markers.
A blood sample is tested using immunoassays such as ELISA to detect the presence of anti-HBc IgM antibodies.
A positive result indicates a recent or acute hepatitis B infection. A negative result may rule out acute HBV.
