Cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM

Measures the presence of IgM antibodies to Cytomegalovirus (CMV), indicating recent or active infection. It is used for diagnosing primary CMV infection. Positive CMV IgM results indicate a recent infection (primary, reactivation, or reinfection).CMV is also responsible for congenital disease among newborns and is one of the TORCH infections (toxoplasmosis, other infections including syphilis, rubella, CMV, and herpes simplex virus).

Frequently Asked Questions

The CMV IgM serum test detects IgM antibodies against Cytomegalovirus, a common virus that can cause serious complications in immunocompromised individuals and newborns. IgM antibodies typically indicate a recent or active infection.

This test is performed to diagnose an active or recent CMV infection, especially in pregnant women, newborns, transplant recipients, and individuals with weakened immune systems. CMV can lead to congenital disabilities or severe complications in these groups.

A blood sample is collected and tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or other immunoassays to detect CMV-specific IgM antibodies.

A positive result suggests an active or recent CMV infection, while a negative result means no current infection. However, IgM can sometimes persist after an infection, so follow-up testing, including IgG antibody testing, may be required for confirmation.

In healthy individuals, CMV usually does not require treatment. However, in high-risk patients, antiviral medications like ganciclovir or valganciclovir may be prescribed to prevent complications.
