Frequently Asked Questions

This test assesses the susceptibility of acid-fast bacilli (AFB), including Mycobacterium tuberculosis, to the antibiotic para-aminosalicylic acid (PAS) at a concentration of 1.0 mg/ml. It helps determine if the tuberculosis (TB) strain is resistant or sensitive to PAS, guiding second-line TB treatment.

It is recommended for patients with multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) or those who do not respond to first-line anti-TB medications. The test aids in tailoring appropriate treatment regimens.

Sputum or other clinical samples (e.g., bronchoalveolar lavage, pus) are cultured, and the isolated bacteria are subjected to drug susceptibility testing in a lab environment. The test measures bacterial growth in the presence of PAS.

If the TB strain shows no growth in the presence of PAS, it is considered sensitive, meaning PAS can be used effectively. If growth persists, the strain is resistant, and alternative medications are necessary.

Due to the slow-growing nature of mycobacteria, results can take 3–6 weeks. Your doctor will discuss the treatment plan once the report is available.
