This test determines the susceptibility of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (AFB) to 10 anti-tubercular drugs using the MGIT 960 system, a rapid, automated culture-based method.
This test is recommended for:
- Patients with confirmed tuberculosis (TB) who require drug susceptibility testing (DST).
- Patients with multi-drug resistant (MDR) or extensively drug-resistant (XDR) TB.
- Individuals not responding to first-line TB treatment.
A sputum or other relevant sample is cultured in the MGIT 960 system, and the growth of the mycobacteria is monitored in the presence of 10 anti-tubercular drugs to assess drug resistance.
- Resistant: The mycobacteria continue to grow despite the presence of the drug, indicating resistance.
- Susceptible: The growth of mycobacteria is inhibited, indicating drug susceptibility.
It helps guide appropriate anti-tubercular therapy, minimizing the risk of drug resistance and improving treatment outcomes.
