This test detects antibodies against SS-B (La), a component of extractable nuclear antigens, which are associated with autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren's syndrome and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).
The test is recommended when patients present with symptoms suggestive of Sjögren's syndrome or SLE, including dry mouth, dry eyes, and joint pain.
A blood sample is collected, and an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or immunoblot technique is used to detect anti-SS-B antibodies.
A positive result suggests the presence of autoimmune disease, most commonly Sjögren's syndrome or SLE. A negative result reduces the likelihood of these conditions but does not rule them out.
