Parvovirus B19 DNA Detection

 This test detects the genetic material (DNA) of Parvovirus B19 in a patient’s blood using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technology. Parvovirus B19 is a common virus known to cause fifth disease in children and can lead to more serious complications in pregnant women, immunocompromised individuals, and those with blood disorders like sickle cell disease.

 The test is advised when a patient shows symptoms such as rash, joint pain, or anemia, or in high-risk groups like pregnant women or individuals with compromised immune systems. It helps confirm active or recent infection, especially when serological tests are inconclusive.

 A sample of blood is drawn from a vein in your arm. The sample is then analyzed in a laboratory to detect even small amounts of the virus’s DNA.

 A positive result confirms an active or recent Parvovirus B19 infection. A negative result typically means that there is no active infection, though timing is important—testing too early may miss the viral presence.
