This test detects IgG antibodies against intrinsic factor, a protein essential for vitamin B12 absorption. The presence of these antibodies is strongly associated with pernicious anemia, an autoimmune disorder leading to B12 deficiency.
If left untreated, vitamin B12 deficiency can cause anemia, fatigue, neuropathy, and neurological complications. Identifying intrinsic factor antibodies confirms the autoimmune cause, allowing for lifelong management and B12 supplementation.
A blood sample is collected and analyzed using immunoassay techniques to detect the presence of IgG antibodies directed against intrinsic factor.
No specific preparation is necessary. You should, however, inform your doctor of any B12 supplements or injections taken recently, as they may influence the results.
Results are typically available within 3–5 days. If the test is positive, additional evaluations like B12 levels and a complete blood count (CBC) may be recommended.
