Frequently Asked Questions

The varicella-zoster virus, which causes shingles and chickenpox, can be found with the VZV-PCR (Varicella-Zoster Virus Polymerase Chain Reaction) test. It is extremely sensitive and can identify the virus in samples of skin lesions, blood, or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

This test should be performed on patients who arrive with vesicular rashes, probable varicella or shingles, or consequences from varicella-zoster reactivation, such as meningitis or encephalitis.

To amplify and find VZV DNA, a sample is taken (such as blood, CSF, or a swab from a skin lesion) and subjected to PCR analysis.

The presence of the varicella-zoster virus is confirmed by positive results, which can indicate either a primary infection (chickenpox) or reactivation (shingles).
