Frequently Asked Questions

Urine Osmolality is a test that measures the concentration of particles (solutes) in the urine. It's used to evaluate the kidney’s ability to concentrate or dilute urine and helps diagnose various conditions related to water balance, electrolyte imbalance, and kidney function.

What Is Being Measured in Osmolality 24 Hr Urine Test?

Urine osmolality measures the number of osmoles of solute per kilogram of urine (Osm/kg or mOsm/kg). It reflects how concentrated or diluted the urine is.

Why Osmolality 24 Hr Urine Test Done

Doctors may order a urine osmolality test to:

  • Evaluate kidney function
  • Investigate electrolyte imbalances
  • Diagnose hyponatremia (low sodium levels in the blood)
  • Assess ADH (antidiuretic hormone) function (e.g., SIADH or diabetes insipidus)
  • Monitor fluid balance in conditions like heart failure, liver cirrhosis, or dehydration

Related Conditions

  • SIADH (Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone)
  • Diabetes Insipidus
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Dehydration / Overhydration
  • Electrolyte disturbances (especially sodium disorders)

Clinical Significance of Urine Osmolality

Urine osmolality is a key diagnostic marker in assessing how well the kidneys concentrate urine and how the body maintains fluid and electrolyte balance, especially sodium. It plays a crucial role in diagnosing and managing renal, endocrine, and fluid/electrolyte disorders.
