Individuals with symptoms of persistent diarrhea, abdominal pain, or fever, particularly after antibiotic use, should take this test to identify C. difficile infection.
A stool sample is collected and analyzed using real-time PCR to detect toxin-producing genes associated with C. difficile.
A positive result indicates the presence of C. difficile and its toxins, confirming an active infection that requires medical intervention.
Patients with positive results may be treated with antibiotics such as vancomycin or fidaxomicin. In severe cases, hospitalization and supportive care may be required.
