The Filaria Antibodies Serum test detects antibodies against filarial parasites, which cause diseases like lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis). It helps in diagnosing filarial infections, especially in asymptomatic cases.

It is performed for individuals with suspected filarial infections, particularly those with prolonged travel or residence in endemic areas. Symptoms like swelling of limbs, fever, and skin changes may warrant testing.

A blood sample is taken and tested for filarial-specific antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or other serological methods.


What do positive results indicate?

A positive result suggests past or active infection with filarial parasites. However, it does not distinguish between past exposure and current infection, so further confirmatory tests like antigen detection of microfilariae smear may be required.


What are the next steps if the test is positive?

If positive, the doctor may prescribe antiparasitic medications like diethylcarbamazine (DEC) or ivermectin. Additional tests may be done to assess the extent of the infection and related complications.
