A Celiac Tissue Biopsy is a diagnostic procedure used to confirm celiac disease by examining small intestinal tissue for damage caused by an immune reaction to gluten.
It is performed when celiac disease is suspected based on symptoms like chronic diarrhea, bloating, weight loss, and anemia, or after positive celiac blood tests such as anti-tTG antibodies.
A small tissue sample is obtained through an endoscopic procedure (upper gastrointestinal endoscopy) and examined under a microscope to assess intestinal damage and villous atrophy.
Abnormal findings, such as villous atrophy, crypt hyperplasia, and increased intraepithelial lymphocytes, confirm celiac disease. The severity of intestinal damage may help guide dietary and treatment recommendations.
If celiac disease is confirmed, the primary treatment is a strict gluten-free diet. Regular follow-ups and nutritional support may be needed to monitor recovery and prevent complications.
