The PV JAK2 Reflex Panel is a genetic test that detects mutations in the JAK2 gene, primarily used to diagnose polycythemia vera (PV) and other myeloproliferative disorders. JAK2 mutations cause abnormal blood cell production, leading to conditions like essential thrombocythemia and primary myelofibrosis.
This test is performed to confirm or rule out polycythemia vera, especially in patients with elevated red blood cell counts, unexplained thrombosis, or splenomegaly. It helps guide treatment and management decisions.
A blood sample is taken, and DNA is extracted to detect JAK2 V617F and other mutations using PCR-based methods.
A positive JAK2 mutation confirms the presence of a myeloproliferative disorder, requiring further clinical evaluation.
Patients may undergo additional tests, such as bone marrow biopsy or blood count monitoring, and treatment with targeted therapies like JAK inhibitors may be considered.
