A nerve biopsy with neurofilament testing involves extracting a small piece of nerve tissue, usually from the sural nerve, to analyze the structure and presence of neurofilaments. It helps diagnose neuropathies and neurodegenerative conditions.
It is recommended when patients exhibit unexplained peripheral neuropathy, progressive muscle weakness, or suspected demyelinating or axonal neuropathies.
