Free Beta hCG

The free beta hCG serum test measures the levels of the beta subunit of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) in the blood. It is used for early pregnancy detection and screening for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome.

This test is recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy as part of prenatal screening to assess the risk of fetal chromosomal abnormalities. It may also be used in the diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic disease or certain types of cancer.

A blood sample is drawn from the patient and analyzed to measure the free beta hCG concentration. Abnormal levels may indicate possible fetal abnormalities or complications.

Elevated levels may be associated with multiple pregnancies, molar pregnancy, or Down syndrome, while low levels may indicate an increased risk of miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy.
