Thalassemia Profile

The Thalassemia Profile Test is a group of blood tests used to diagnose thalassemia, determine whether someone is a carrier (trait), or has a more serious form of the disease. It helps distinguish thalassemia from other causes of anemia, like iron deficiency.

 

Why Consider this test ?

1. Complete Blood Count (CBC) with RBC Indices

Measures red blood cell size, count, and hemoglobin level.

2. Peripheral Blood Smear

• Looks at the shape and appearance of RBCs under a microscope.
• Target cells, microcytosis, and anisopoikilocytosis may be seen in thalassemia.

3.Hemoglobin Electrophoresis

4. Iron Studies (to rule out iron deficiency)

1.           People with Microcytic Anemia (Low MCV) but Normal Iron Levels

3.           Couples Planning to Have Children (Especially in High-Risk Groups)
