Cobalt

The cobalt blood test measures the level of cobalt in the blood, primarily used to monitor exposure to cobalt from occupational sources or medical implants such as metal-on-metal hip replacements. High cobalt levels may indicate metal toxicity.

It is recommended for patients who have had metal implants or suspected cobalt toxicity. Symptoms of cobalt toxicity include fatigue, cognitive issues, and cardiomyopathy. It may also be used in individuals exposed to cobalt in industrial settings.

A blood sample is drawn from a vein, and the cobalt level is measured using techniques such as ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry).

• Normal levels: Indicate minimal or no exposure to cobalt.
• Elevated levels: May indicate exposure to cobalt from implants or occupational hazards, requiring further evaluation.
