Adenosine deaminase is an enzyme produced by activated immune cells during the body’s response to certain infections and inflammatory conditions. In cerebrospinal fluid, increased ADA activity may be seen in tuberculous meningitis, although it is not specific to tuberculosis. For this reason, the test is usually performed alongside CSF microscopy, culture, molecular tests such as TB PCR, imaging studies, and clinical evaluation to improve diagnostic accuracy.
