LEPRA SMEAR

The Lepra Smear test detects Mycobacterium leprae, the bacterium that causes leprosy, using a microscopic examination of skin smears.

Individuals with suspected leprosy, characterized by skin lesions, numbness, and nerve damage, should undergo this test.

A skin smear sample is stained and examined under a microscope to detect acid-fast bacilli.

Positive results indicate the presence of M. leprae, confirming a diagnosis of leprosy.

Positive cases require multidrug therapy (MDT) to treat and control the infection.
