The AML1-ETO (RUNX1-RUNX1T1) fusion gene, which is frequently linked to acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) with t(8;21) translocation, can be detected with the AML ETO by FISH test.
In order to confirm the diagnosis and decide on a course of therapy, patients with suspected or confirmed acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), particularly those who have cytogenetic abnormalities, should think about this test.
Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) is used to identify the AML1-ETO translocation in a bone marrow or peripheral blood sample.
A positive result confirms AML with t(8;21), which often has a better prognosis than other AML subtypes, and shows the presence of the AML1-ETO translocation.
Standard chemotherapy regimens frequently have good results for patients with this translocation; nevertheless, long-term care requires monitoring for minimal residual disease (MRD).
