CRYPTOSPORIDIUM ANTIGEN DETECTION

 The Cryptosporidium antigen detection test is used to diagnose infections caused by Cryptosporidium species—a protozoan parasite that causes gastrointestinal illness, primarily diarrhea. The test detects specific antigens (proteins) of the parasite in stool samples.

 It is primarily recommended for individuals with persistent watery diarrhea, especially in children, immunocompromised patients (such as those with HIV/AIDS), or travelers returning from areas with poor sanitation. It is also used during outbreak investigations of waterborne diseases.

 A stool sample is collected and analyzed using enzyme immunoassay (EIA) or other immunologic techniques to detect Cryptosporidium antigens. This method is more sensitive and specific compared to traditional stool microscopy.

 A positive result confirms the presence of Cryptosporidium antigens, indicating an active infection. A negative result generally rules out current infection, though repeat testing or additional diagnostic methods may be considered if symptoms persist.

 Treatment typically involves supportive care such as hydration and electrolyte management. In immunocompetent individuals, the infection may resolve spontaneously, while immunocompromised patients may require antiparasitic medications like nitazoxanide. Managing the underlying immunosuppression is also crucial for recovery.
