INVERSION 16 (FISH)

 This test is used to detect a specific chromosomal rearrangement known as inversion 16 [inv(16)(p13q22)], commonly associated with a subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), particularly M4Eo. It helps in diagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of treatment response in AML patients.

 The test is performed on bone marrow or peripheral blood samples using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technology. This technique uses fluorescent probes that bind specifically to the altered regions of chromosome 16, enabling visualization under a fluorescence microscope.

 Inversion 16 is associated with a favorable prognosis in AML when detected early and treated appropriately. Identifying this mutation helps tailor therapy, stratify patients by risk, and monitor for minimal residual disease.

 No special preparation is typically needed. However, if bone marrow aspiration is required, local anesthesia and procedural consent may be necessary. Your doctor will provide pre-procedure instructions if applicable.
