11Q23 MLL REARRANGEMENT (FISH)

Translocations involving the MLL (Mixed Lineage Leukaemia) gene on chromosome 11 are identified using the MLL 11q Rearrangement test. Acute leukaemias, such as acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML), are frequently linked to these rearrangements.

To ascertain prognosis and treatment choices, patients with acute leukaemia, especially those with unusual presentations or a high white blood cell count, should have their MLL rearrangements examined.

To find MLL gene rearrangements, a bone marrow or blood sample is examined using PCR or fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH).

The existence of MLL rearrangements, which are linked to aggressive leukaemia and may necessitate more intense therapy, is indicated by positive results.
