In order to determine measles-related neurological problems such as subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), this test detects IgG antibodies against the measles (rubeola) virus in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Those who experience neurological symptoms following a measles infection, such as seizures, cognitive deterioration, or behavioural problems, are advised to take it.
CSF is obtained by lumbar puncture (spinal tap), and IgG antibody levels are then assessed.
No, this test does not confirm an active infection, but it detects past exposure or persistent immune response.
A positive result indicates either a prior measles infection or SSPE. This might require an immediate medical examination and treatment.
