In a bone marrow trephine biopsy, a small core sample of bone marrow is extracted to evaluate the production of blood cells. It is commonly used to diagnose the following:
- Leukemia and lymphoma
- Aplastic anemia
- Multiple myeloma
- Bone marrow infections
A small cylindrical marrow sample is extracted with the help of a needle insertion into the hipbone, performed under local anesthesia.
Slight discomfort lasts for 1-2 days, but most patients can resume normal physical activities within 24 hours of the extraction.
