Cyfra 21-1

CYFRA 21-1 is a tumor marker test used primarily to monitor non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), especially squamous cell carcinoma. It measures a fragment of cytokeratin 19 found in the blood, which is released by cancerous cells. Elevated levels of CYFRA 21-1 may indicate the presence or progression of certain types of cancers.

The test requires a blood sample drawn from a vein in the arm. This sample is then analyzed in a laboratory to measure the level of CYFRA 21-1. The procedure is simple and usually does not require any special preparation.

Elevated CYFRA 21-1 levels can suggest the presence of lung cancer or indicate cancer recurrence in patients who have already been treated. However, high levels may also be found in other malignancies and even some benign conditions, so results should always be interpreted in conjunction with other diagnostic findings.

CYFRA 21-1 is not typically used for screening in the general population because it is not specific enough. Its primary utility is in monitoring treatment response and detecting recurrence in patients with a known diagnosis of certain cancers.

While CYFRA 21-1 can be a useful marker in specific cancer cases, it is not definitive on its own. Non-cancerous conditions like liver diseases and infections may also cause elevated levels. Therefore, the test should always be considered alongside imaging studies and clinical evaluation.
