Frequently Asked Questions

The Neisseria gonorrhoeae culture test involves growing the bacteria from a patient’s sample in a lab environment. It is used to confirm infection and, importantly, to test the bacteria’s resistance to antibiotics.

This test is especially useful when antibiotic resistance is suspected, when a patient has persistent symptoms despite treatment, or if PCR is not available or inconclusive.

A swab is taken from the suspected site of infection—commonly the cervix, urethra, rectum, or throat. The specimen is then cultured under specific conditions that allow the bacteria to grow.

A positive result confirms the presence of N. gonorrhoeae. If the bacteria grow successfully, additional testing can determine which antibiotics are most effective. A negative result may either mean there is no infection or that the bacteria did not survive the transport to the lab.

Avoid using antibiotics before the test if possible. Also, it’s helpful to inform the healthcare provider about any symptoms or previous treatments.
