- Individuals with persistent cough, fever, and weight loss.
- Patients with HIV or immunosuppressive conditions.
A sample (sputum, tissue, or other body fluids) is stained and examined under a microscope to identify acid-fast bacteria.
- Positive Result: Presence of acid-fast bacteria, likely indicating TB or other mycobacterial infections.
- Negative Result: No detectable mycobacteria, but TB cannot be ruled out completely.
An early diagnosis of TB through AFB smear facilitates timely treatment and helps prevent transmission.
