CULTURE GARDNERELLA VAGINALIS

This test is used to detect the presence of Gardnerella vaginalis, a bacterial species commonly associated with bacterial vaginosis (BV), a condition characterized by an imbalance of normal vaginal flora. The culture allows for the identification and growth of Gardnerella in a laboratory setting, helping confirm the diagnosis in symptomatic women presenting with unusual vaginal discharge or odor.

The test is typically recommended for women who have symptoms of bacterial vaginosis, such as a fishy-smelling, thin, grey or white vaginal discharge, itching, or irritation. It may also be performed in pregnant women or those undergoing gynecological procedures to rule out infections that could lead to complications. Diagnosis and treatment of BV is particularly important in pregnant women due to its association with preterm labor.

The sample is collected using a swab inserted into the vagina to gather secretions from the vaginal walls. This swab is then placed in a culture medium and incubated in the laboratory to allow Gardnerella to grow. The procedure is simple, quick, and generally painless, though some women may experience mild discomfort.

A positive culture indicates the presence of Gardnerella vaginalis, suggesting bacterial vaginosis when interpreted alongside clinical symptoms and pH testing. A negative result means that the bacterium was not detected, though it does not entirely rule out BV, as other tests like Gram stain or molecular assays may still be required for a complete diagnosis.

 If the culture is positive and the patient is symptomatic, treatment typically involves antibiotics such as metronidazole or clindamycin. Patients are also advised to avoid douching and maintain vaginal hygiene. In cases of recurrent infections, further evaluation may be needed, and sexual partners may also be considered for treatment in persistent cases.
