Frequently Asked Questions

The NBS (Newborn Screening) Total Galactose test measures galactose levels in a newborn’s blood to screen for galactosemia, a metabolic disorder affecting the body's ability to process galactose.

Newborns with galactosemia cannot properly metabolize galactose, leading to severe complications like liver damage, cataracts, and developmental delays if left untreated. Early detection helps prevent these outcomes through dietary modifications.

A small blood sample is taken from the baby’s heel (heel prick test) and analyzed for galactose levels.

High galactose levels suggest galactosemia, requiring further confirmatory testing and immediate dietary adjustments.

Yes, avoiding lactose-containing foods (like dairy) can help prevent complications, and early dietary intervention improves the child’s long-term health.
