Neurotropic Virus Panel

This panel detects a range of neurotropic viruses, which affect the nervous system, including herpesvirus and enterovirus. It helps in diagnosing infections that cause neurological symptoms.

Neurotropic Virus Panel Test in Mangaluru Overview

What is Neurotropic Virus Panel, CSF test?

Neurotropic Virus Panel, CSF is a molecular diagnostic test performed on cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) to detect the presence of viruses that infect the central nervous system (CNS). Neurotropic Virus Panel test typically uses multiplex PCR (polymerase chain reaction) technology to simultaneously detect multiple neurotropic viruses — viruses that can cause meningitis, encephalitis, or other neurologic conditions.

Why consider Neurotropic Virus Panel, CSF test?

Neurotropic Virus Panel test can be considered

  • To rapidly diagnose viral causes of CNS infections.
  • To differentiate between viral, bacterial, or autoimmune encephalitis/meningitis.
  • To guide early and appropriate antiviral treatment (e.g., acyclovir for HSV).
  • To avoid unnecessary antibiotics when viral etiology is confirmed.
  • To assist in managing immunocompromised or critically ill patients.
  • To help identify outbreaks of neurotropic viruses in healthcare or community settings.

Who should get tested for Neurotropic Virus Panel, CSF test?

Neurotropic Virus Panel test is typically recommended for individuals who present with:

  • Symptoms of Encephalitis (brain inflammation) such as Altered mental status (confusion, disorientation), Seizures, Fever and headache, Personality or behavior changes, Coma or decreased responsiveness
  • Symptoms of Meningitis (meningeal inflammation) such as severe headache, Neck stiffness, Photophobia (light sensitivity), Nausea and vomiting, Fever
  • Myelitis (spinal cord inflammation) such as Weakness or paralysis, Sensory loss, Urinary retention or bowel dysfunction
  • Rapidly progressive neurological symptoms Especially when bacterial cultures are negative and autoimmune causes are not yet confirmed.
  • Immunocompromised patients (e.g., HIV, transplant, chemotherapy)

More Information about Neurotropic Virus Panel, CSF test

Other Names: CNS Viral PCR Panel, CSF Encephalitis/Meningitis Panel, Viral Pathogen Panel – CSF, Multiplex PCR for Neurotropic Viruses

Neurotropic viruses are viruses that have a specific affinity for infecting nerve cells (neurons) or the nervous system in general. These viruses can invade the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nervous system (PNS), leading to neurological diseases. They can infect neurons, glial cells, or other components of the nervous system & can cause a range of neurological conditions from mild meningitis to severe encephalitis or paralysis.
