IDENTIFICATION - GRAM NEGATIVE ORGANISM
This test is used to identify and classify gram-negative bacteria from clinical specimens. It helps diagnose infections caused by bacteria like E. coli, Klebsiella, and Pseudomonas. Identifying the specific bacteria is essential for selecting the right antibiotics and treatment plan.

This test involves the microbiological identification of gram-negative bacteria from a clinical specimen such as blood, urine, sputum, or wound swabs. Gram-negative organisms are a group of bacteria characterized by their outer membrane, which makes them more resistant to antibiotics. They are known to cause serious infections, including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and sepsis.
A specimen is cultured on selective media in a microbiology lab. Once bacterial growth is observed, further tests such as Gram staining, biochemical reactions, and automated systems (like VITEK or MALDI-TOF) are used to identify the specific species of the gram-negative bacterium.
The test result will identify the specific gram-negative bacterium (e.g., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) causing the infection. This information helps clinicians choose the most effective antibiotic for treatment. Antibiotic susceptibility testing may also be carried out alongside identification.
Patients showing signs of infection—fever, chills, organ-specific symptoms—and whose clinician suspects a bacterial origin may undergo this test. It is especially important for hospitalized patients or those with compromised immunity.
No specific preparation is needed. However, the sample collection technique may vary based on the suspected site of infection and must be performed using sterile methods.
