The Xpert MTB/RIF Extrapulmonary test detects the presence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance in samples other than sputum (e.g., lymph node, pleural fluid).
It is used for rapid diagnosis of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB), especially when conventional testing is inconclusive.
Specimens from extrapulmonary sites are processed using real-time PCR on the GeneXpert platform to detect MTB DNA and drug resistance.
A positive result confirms TB infection, and detection of rifampicin resistance guides the need for second-line treatment.
No specific preparation is needed. Sample type depends on the clinical suspicion.
