Frequently Asked Questions

The Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) test is used in sex-mismatched BMT to track the engraftment of donor cells. Since male and female chromosomes are different (XX for females, XY for males), the test helps determine if the transplant has successfully taken hold by detecting donor-specific genetic material.

The FISH test:

  • Identifies donor and recipient cells in the blood or bone marrow
  • Monitors the success of the transplant
  • Detects graft failure or disease relapse early

A sample of blood or bone marrow is taken, and fluorescent DNA probes target sex chromosomes to differentiate between donor and recipient cells.
