This test detects IgM antibodies against the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox and shingles.
This test is recommended for:
- Patients with symptoms of chickenpox or shingles.
- Pregnant women with suspected VZV exposure.
- Immunocompromised individuals at risk of severe VZV infection.
A blood sample is analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or immunofluorescence to detect VZV IgM antibodies.
- Positive IgM: Indicates recent or active VZV infection.
- Negative IgM: No recent infection, but past immunity cannot be excluded.
Early detection of VZV infection helps initiate timely antiviral treatment, especially in high-risk populations.
