What does the Stool Ova and Parasite (O&P) test detect?

 This test is used to identify parasites and their eggs (ova) in a stool sample. It helps diagnose intestinal infections caused by protozoa and helminths such as Giardia, Entamoeba histolytica, Ascaris, Trichuris, and others. These infections are common in areas with poor sanitation or among travelers and immunocompromised individuals.


When is this test recommended?

 It is recommended for individuals experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, unexplained weight loss, or blood and mucus in stools. It is particularly useful for those returning from travel to areas with a high risk of parasitic infections or for evaluating suspected outbreaks in a community setting.


How is the sample collected and tested?

 A fresh stool sample is collected in a sterile container, and multiple samples (usually over 2–3 days) may be required for accurate results. The sample is examined microscopically for the presence of parasites or eggs. Special staining techniques and concentration methods may be used to enhance detection.


What do the results indicate?

 A positive result confirms the presence of one or more intestinal parasites. Depending on the type detected, specific anti-parasitic medications can be prescribed. A negative result doesn't always rule out parasitic infection, especially if symptoms persist—repeat testing or other diagnostic methods may be necessary.


Is any preparation needed for the test?

 Typically, no preparation is required, but patients may be advised to avoid certain medications like antacids, antibiotics, or anti-diarrheal agents before sample collection, as these can interfere with the accuracy of the test.
