What is the Protein C Antigen test?

This test measures the level of Protein C in the blood using the Enzyme-Linked Fluorescent Assay (ELFA) technique. Protein C is a natural anticoagulant that regulates blood clot formation.


Why is this test done?

It helps in evaluating patients with unexplained blood clots or a family history of thrombophilia. Deficiency of Protein C can lead to an increased risk of venous thromboembolism.


How is the test performed?

A blood sample is collected in a citrate tube and processed to isolate plasma. The ELFA method detects and quantifies Protein C antigen levels.


What do the results mean?

Low levels of Protein C indicate a deficiency that may be inherited or acquired due to liver disease, vitamin K deficiency, or anticoagulant therapy. Normal levels suggest a low likelihood of Protein C deficiency.


Are there any precautions or preparations required?

Avoid anticoagulant medications if advised, and fasting may be recommended. Inform the healthcare provider about ongoing treatments or medical conditions.
