C-KIT Mutation Detection/Bone Marrow

The test is used to detect mutations in the C-KIT gene, which encodes a receptor tyrosine kinase. Mutations in this gene are associated with gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs), mastocytosis, and some leukemias. It helps in diagnosing and guiding targeted therapy.

Patients diagnosed with GISTs, certain types of leukemia, or mast cell disorders may be advised to undergo this test. Identifying mutations helps in selecting tyrosine kinase inhibitors like imatinib for treatment.

The test usually requires a tissue sample obtained during biopsy or surgery. In hematologic cases, peripheral blood or bone marrow samples may be used.

A positive result indicates the presence of a C-KIT mutation, which may influence both prognosis and treatment. Different mutations (e.g., exon 11 vs. exon 17) may respond differently to therapy, so specific mutation details matter.
