What is the Cytomegalovirus (CMV) IgM Serum test?

The CMV IgM serum test detects IgM antibodies against Cytomegalovirus, a common virus that can cause serious complications in immunocompromised individuals and newborns. IgM antibodies typically indicate a recent or active infection.


Why is this test performed?

This test is performed to diagnose an active or recent CMV infection, especially in pregnant women, newborns, transplant recipients, and individuals with weakened immune systems. CMV can lead to congenital disabilities or severe complications in these groups.


How is the test conducted?

A blood sample is collected and tested using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or other immunoassays to detect CMV-specific IgM antibodies.


What do the test results indicate?

A positive result suggests an active or recent CMV infection, while a negative result means no current infection. However, IgM can sometimes persist after an infection, so follow-up testing, including IgG antibody testing, may be required for confirmation.


How is CMV treated if detected?

In healthy individuals, CMV usually does not require treatment. However, in high-risk patients, antiviral medications like ganciclovir or valganciclovir may be prescribed to prevent complications.
