What is the Varicella Zoster IgM Serum Test?

This test detects IgM antibodies against the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), which causes chickenpox and shingles.


Who should get this test?

This test is recommended for:

Patients with symptoms of chickenpox or shingles.
Pregnant women with suspected VZV exposure.
Immunocompromised individuals at risk of severe VZV infection.



How is the test performed?

A blood sample is analyzed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or immunofluorescence to detect VZV IgM antibodies.


What do the results indicate?


Positive IgM: Indicates recent or active VZV infection.
Negative IgM: No recent infection, but past immunity cannot be excluded.

Early detection of VZV infection helps initiate timely antiviral treatment, especially in high-risk populations.
