This test identifies microfilariae (larval forms of parasitic worms) in the blood, primarily used to diagnose filariasis, a mosquito-borne disease.
This test is recommended for:
- Individuals with lymphatic swelling or elephantiasis.
- People residing in or traveling to endemic regions.
- Patients with unexplained fever, lymphadenopathy, or eosinophilia.
A blood sample is collected (preferably at night when microfilariae circulate) and examined using microscopic, antigen detection, or PCR techniques.
- Positive Result: Confirms active filarial infection.
- Negative Result: Suggests no detectable microfilariae, but periodic testing may be needed.
Early detection helps prevent severe complications, such as lymphedema and hydrocele.
