SPECIAL STAINS, TISSUEPARAFFIN BLOCK

The Special Strains Panel is a comprehensive microbiological test used to identify rare, fastidious, or clinically significant strains of bacteria or fungi that may not grow on routine culture media. It is typically employed when standard diagnostic tests are inconclusive, especially in cases of persistent infections.

This test is recommended when there is a clinical suspicion of an unusual infection, or if the patient has symptoms of infection but routine bacterial or fungal cultures fail to identify the pathogen. It may also be used in immunocompromised individuals or those with hospital-acquired infections.

Depending on the suspected site of infection, samples such as tissue, fluids, or swabs are collected and cultured on specialized media. Advanced identification methods such as MALDI-TOF, molecular testing, or biochemical profiling may also be employed.

 No specific preparation is needed. However, the sample collection site may vary, and sterile techniques are used to avoid contamination.

Since this test involves culturing slow-growing or difficult organisms, results may take 5 to 14 days or longer depending on the organism detected. Your doctor will use the findings to tailor antibiotic or antifungal therapy.
