Frequently Asked Questions

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) blood tests are meant to measure the concentration of this drug in your blood to check for overdose or toxicity. It's an important tool diagnosing damage to the liver, unintended poisoning, and complications from overdose.

Symptoms of overdose include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pains, confusion, jaundice, and even liver failure. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought.

A blood sample is collected from a vein, usually around 4 hours after ingestion since this is when the levels peak. On receipt of results, the decision on administering an antidote such as N-acetylcysteine will be made.

Above 150-200 mcg/mL at 4 hours post-ingestion indicates a risk for liver toxicity and requires urgent treatment.
