PIK3CA GENE MUTATIONS (EXON 9 & 20) TISSUEBLOCKS

This molecular test detects mutations in the PIK3CA gene, which is commonly altered in cancers like breast, colorectal, and endometrial cancers. It helps guide targeted therapy decisions.

It is ordered in cancer patients to identify eligibility for PI3K inhibitors and to understand tumor behavior. It is often included in larger oncology panels.

Tumor tissue or blood (liquid biopsy) is analyzed using PCR or NGS to detect mutations in the PIK3CA gene.

A positive result confirms a PIK3CA mutation, which may make the patient eligible for specific targeted therapies like alpelisib. A negative result suggests the absence of this mutation.

If the mutation is present, oncologists may tailor treatment using PI3K inhibitors. Ongoing monitoring and resistance testing may be needed during therapy.
