Thrombin Time measures the time it takes for a clot to form in plasma after the addition of thrombin. It evaluates the final step of the coagulation pathway and is used to assess fibrinogen function.
It helps identify abnormalities in fibrinogen function, detect the presence of anticoagulants like heparin, and monitor fibrinolytic therapy. It is used when prolonged clotting is suspected without a clear cause.
A blood sample is collected and plasma is isolated. Thrombin is added to the plasma, and the time taken to form a clot is recorded.
Prolonged TT indicates potential fibrinogen abnormality, heparin presence, or dysfibrinogenemia. Normal TT rules out issues in the final common pathway of coagulation.
Patients may be asked to withhold anticoagulant medications prior to testing. No special diet or fasting is required.
