Parathormone (PTH) Intact and Calcium

Measures parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcium levels to assess calcium metabolism and parathyroid function. It helps diagnose conditions like hyperparathyroidism or calcium imbalances.

Parathormone (PTH) Intact and Calcium Package in Bengaluru Overview

The Intact PTH (Parathyroid Hormone) test measures the level of intact parathyroid hormone in the blood. PTH is produced by the parathyroid glands, which are located in the neck near the thyroid gland. This hormone plays a crucial role in regulating calcium levels in the blood and bone metabolism. The "intact" in Intact PTH refers to the fact that the test measures the full, biologically active form of the hormone, as opposed to its fragments. This provides a more accurate assessment of parathyroid function and activity.

Why consider this test?

The Intact Parathyroid Hormone (PTH) test is used for several key reasons:

  1. Diagnosis of Parathyroid Disorders
  2. Assessment of Bone Health
  3. Evaluation of Calcium Levels
  4. Monitoring Treatment
  5. Differentiating between causes of hypercalcemia

By measuring the intact form of PTH, which is the biologically active version, healthcare providers get a clearer picture of parathyroid function and can make more informed decisions about diagnosis and treatment.

Who should get this test done?

  • Individuals with symptoms of high calcium levels (e.g., fatigue, bone pain, kidney stones).
  • People with low calcium levels or those on treatments affecting calcium metabolism (e.g., vitamin D deficiency).
  • Patients with chronic kidney disease or those undergoing treatment for bone-related disorders.

More information

This hormone is secreted by the parathyroid glands when blood calcium levels drop and helps bring back the calcium level to normal levels.

The most important role of parathyroid hormone is to regulate calcium, phosphate and Vitamin D synthesis and help in bone growth and formation. It also directs the kidneys to reduce elimination of calcium and it also directs the kidneys to convert vitamin D to its active form which in turn promotes the absorption of calcium from the intestines. As we can see, both parathyroid hormone and Vitamin D are all critical to maintain healthy levels of calcium in the blood.
