What is Enteroquick?
A Enteroquick is the primary choice for the detection of antibodies against pathogens such as Salmonella typhi from blood specimens. Instead of manually read broth-based conventional methods, laboratories use continuously monitored, automated blood culture systems for the processing of blood culture specimens nowadays.
Enteroquick test detects IgM antibodies against Salmonella typhi. With the help of this test, the presence or absence of Salmonella typhi can be detected. Salmonella typhi is responsible for causing typhoid fever.
Who needs to get tested for Enteroquick ?
The two major symptoms of typhoid are fever and rash. Typhoid fever is particularly high, gradually increasing over several days up to 104 degrees Fahrenheit, or 39 to 40 degrees Celsius.
The rash, which does not affect every patient, consists of rose-coloured spots, particularly on the neck and abdomen.
Other symptoms can include:
- weakness
- abdominal pain
- constipation
- headaches
Rarely, symptoms might include confusion, diarrhoea, and vomiting, but this is not normally severe.
In serious, untreated cases, the bowel can become perforated. This can lead to peritonitis, an infection of the tissue that lines the inside of the abdomen, which has been reported as fatal in between
More about Typhoid
Typhoid fever is an infectious disease caused by a bacterium, Salmonella typhi. It continues to be a major health problem. Definitive clinical diagnosis of typhoid is unreliable because typhoid fever symptoms mimic other diseases with fever that are common in this part of the world.
Clinical presentations vary tremendously among patients and cover a wide spectrum, hence the need for a good laboratory test. In addition, an accurate diagnosis of typhoid at an early stage is important not only for an aetiological diagnosis for the patient but also to identify individuals that might serve as a source of infection. Thus, all cases of fever should be tested for typhoid and a rapid laboratory test will be required.
The infection is often passed on through contaminated food and drinking water, and it is more prevalent in places where handwashing is less frequent. It can also be passed on by carriers who do not know they carry the bacteria.
A blood culture test helps your doctor figure out if you have a kind of infection such as Typhoid fever that is in your bloodstream and can affect your entire body. Doctors call this a systemic infection. The test checks a sample of your blood for bacteria or yeast that might be causing the infection.
Why is Enteroquick done ?
The Enteroquick test is done:
- To aid in cause of fever
- In case of signs or symptoms of typhoid fever
Some people are asymptomatic carriers of typhoid, meaning that they harbour the bacteria but suffer no ill effects. Others continue to harbour the bacteria after their symptoms have gone. Sometimes, the disease can appear again.
Interpretation:
The result is considered negative if there is no growth/presence of pathogens. While a positive test signifies that there are microorganisms present that could be causing typhoid infection in your blood. Sometimes the symptoms still persist inpatient even if the test report is negative. In such circumstances the doctor orders for advanced tests
To know more about theEnteroquick test and their result interpretation, it is always best to seek consultation from health experts.
