OSTEOCALCIN, SERUM
Measures osteocalcin, a protein produced by bone-forming cells, to assess bone turnover and bone health. It is useful for diagnosing osteoporosis and evaluating the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments.
OSTEOCALCIN, SERUM Test in Bengaluru Overview
No special preparations needed
- Osteocalcin
The Osteocalcin Serum test measures the levels of osteocalcin, a protein secreted by osteoblasts, which plays a key role in bone formation and metabolism. It serves as a biomarker for bone turnover and is often used to assess bone health, particularly in conditions like osteoporosis, metabolic bone diseases, and certain endocrine disorders.
This test is primarily used to evaluate bone remodeling activity. It is commonly ordered for individuals at risk of osteoporosis, postmenopausal women, and patients undergoing treatment for metabolic bone diseases. It also helps in monitoring the effectiveness of therapies that target bone metabolism, such as bisphosphonates or hormone replacement therapy.
A blood sample is collected from a vein in the arm and sent to a laboratory for analysis. No special preparation is usually required, though in some cases, fasting might be recommended. Certain medications, such as vitamin D supplements and osteoporosis drugs, can influence osteocalcin levels, so it is important to inform the doctor about any medications being taken.
High osteocalcin levels can indicate increased bone turnover, often seen in osteoporosis, hyperparathyroidism, Paget’s disease, and certain cancers affecting the bones. Low levels may be associated with decreased bone formation, which can occur due to aging, prolonged corticosteroid use, or specific metabolic disorders. The results should be interpreted in conjunction with other bone health markers.
If osteocalcin levels are abnormal, further tests such as bone density scans (DEXA), calcium and vitamin D level assessments, and other bone turnover markers may be recommended. Treatment plans may include lifestyle modifications, medications to improve bone density, or addressing underlying metabolic conditions. Regular monitoring is often necessary to track changes in bone health over time.
