SPERM ANTIBODIES, SERUM

The sperm antibodies serum test detects the presence of anti-sperm antibodies in the blood, which can interfere with sperm function and lead to infertility. These antibodies can develop in either partner and prevent sperm from moving or fertilizing the egg properly.

This test is recommended for couples experiencing unexplained infertility, recurrent miscarriages, or failed in-vitro fertilization (IVF) attempts. It is also used when a man has had a vasectomy reversal or experienced trauma to the testicles, increasing the likelihood of antibody development.

A blood sample is collected from the patient, and the serum is analyzed to detect antibodies that target sperm. Immunoassays or indirect immunofluorescence techniques are used to identify the presence and concentration of these antibodies.

A positive result indicates the presence of anti-sperm antibodies, which may impair sperm mobility and fertilization. In men, it suggests immune-mediated infertility, while in women, it may indicate immune system responses that attack incoming sperm.

Treatment options include assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) to bypass the effects of the antibodies. Corticosteroids or immunosuppressive therapy may also be considered in certain cases.
