A recent measles infection or recent vaccination is indicated by the presence of IgM antibodies in the blood, which are detected by the Measles (IgM) antibodies serum test. It is advised for people who have been exposed to an infected person or who are exhibiting measles-like symptoms like fever, rash, cough, and conjunctivitis.
Although cross-reactivity with different viral infections might result in false positives, this test is quite accurate at identifying recent infections. For confirmation, an IgG antibody test or PCR test may be employed.
IgM antibodies can last for 4–8 weeks and usually show up 3–7 days after the rash first appears.
